How Inner-Ring Suburban Churches Do the Work of Social Justice

Myron Orfield has agreed to share his insights about the Richfield area, especially related to housing, education, and transportation. Myron is a very engaging speaker. Outreach Ministry Team needs you! ~ Doing God’s work with our hands! Do you have an interest in service to our local and global community? The Outreach Ministry Team is looking for you. We have a core group of dedicated members but as always more hands make lighter work. We meet the third Thursdays of the month at House of Prayer at 5:30pm. We manage the outreach accounts and determine where to donate the HOPE funds. Please give prayerful consideration to joining us. Contact Larry Edlund.

Fare for All is a cooperative food buying program of the Emergency Foodshelf Network located in the Richfield Community Center. Open to everyone, Fare for All sells packages of fresh fruits and vegetables and frozen meats with prices ranging from $10 to $25 per package, for up to 40% LESS than grocery store prices. Food sales take place one Tuesday each month at the Richfield Community Center, 7000 Nicollet Ave. Remaining dates: February 21,March 20 and April 24 from 1:00-3:00 pm. Simpson Shelter ~ House of Prayer serves the homeless on the second Tuesday of every month. The time commitment is about 3.5 hours. If you would like to be a part of this outreach ministry, contact Karen Steenson.

House of Prayer has welcomed two new members to its staff!
Linda Lund joins our staff as Visitation Pastor. Pastor Linda has been a member of House of Prayer since 1969. She served 6 years as Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Lake, Minnesota, and most recently served for 7 years as Chaplain at Augustana Health Care Center in Hastings. Carly Harrison joins our staff as the Administrative Assistant. Some of her duties will be compiling information for Community News, E-News and Hi-Lines. EVANGELISM MINISTRY TEAM
Sunday Morning Greeters Needed!
We are seeking several friendly faces willing to be greeters at the door before Sunday and Holy Week services. Only requirement is to arrive at church about 15-20 minutes before the start of service, put on the special nametag, smile and welcome worshippers, members or visitors alike. Great volunteer opportunity for families! Call Emilie Femrite if you could help one time or more.

February is the last month that Faith Talk will be offered. Thanks to all of you have have supported this ministry over the past five years. Thank you also to the Adult Ed team members who have served for many years: Jeanne Lindstrom, Jean Robbins, Sandy Hatfield, Ellen Thompson, Barb Bauer, Linda Lund and Karen Steenson.
Wednesday Evening Lenten Bible Study
The resource for this season of growing as Christ’s followers is “Real Faith for Real Life” by Michael W. Foss. The book costs $10.50. Bible study sessions take place Wednesdays 4:15 pm – 5:15 pm and 7:45 pm – 8:30pm. Please sign-up for one of the sessions at the Information Desk or by calling the Church office (612-866-8471).
After Easter, the Adult Bible Study will Resume.
The Bible study is an overview of Genesis through Revelation that introduces the key people, places, and events of scripture in an easy-to-understand story. Participants are invited to explore where they fit in the greatest story and how the greatest story fits in their lives. Each session is visually depicted through captivating session videos that feature the sand art of renowned artist Joe Castillo. Wednesdays November 2011 through May 2012 (Study takes a break during Lent) at 6:30 pm.

– Novel about an American woman researching the truth of Vichy France’s complicity in the Nazi Holocaust
Quetico by Jon Nelson (brother of HoP’s Carol Johnson!)
– Nature lovers will appreciate reading about the flora, fauna, geology, history, and personal anecdotes about this Canadian Provincial Park, which adjoins Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Changing the Converstion: a Third Way for Congregations by Anthony B. Robinson (donated by Pastor Anne and Arvid)
– Thought-provoking ideas for a church in transition like ours!
Lectionary Bible Study meets each Thursday from 9:30- 11:00 am. to discuss the upcoming Sunday morning Bible texts. Coffee is served. All are welcome.

Weekly GREEN Tip: Don’t send unwanted items to the land fill–donate them. You can donate clothes, toys, even used building supplies to organizations that will make use of them and reuse them. All of these things took resources and energy to produce, so we should re-use them.

Luther Park needs a new Double Stack Convection Oven. Our current ovens are not reliable and parts are not available. Our cooks are still preparing spectacular meals for guests in spite of this, but if you’d like to help reduce their stress, simply write your check to Luther Park and mail it to 30376 Lakes Drive, Danbury, WI 54830. Please be sure to indicate “Convection
Oven” on the memo of the check. The cost is about $6,500. Gifts of all sizes are welcome!

What a celebration on the 18th for Pastor Chuck after his 26 years of dedication to House of Prayer! Each day brings new opportunities for sharing life together at House of Prayer; and the Heritage Team would like to record and track the important events in our church history as well as include the everyday actions and proceedings of the congregation. Living Giving to God!
Last week House of Prayer volunteers donated 18 hours of their time. Members of the church volunteered this past Wednesday serving Simple Suppers. They also donated their time to Lutheran Social Service and in the Church office. Others cleaned around the church.

New Technology ~ House of Prayer Tape Ministry is now changed to the Compact Disc Ministry. Although this ministry is designed for people who are unable to get to church, anyone is welcome to have a copy. Jim Youngquist can help you with your requests. Discs will be available on Sundays after the sermon. Recordings of our services are also available on our website.
Grandmas wanted!! ~ We want you to join HoP Grandmas’ Club. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month, starting on September 15 through May 18. We start out with a very informal meeting followed by devotions and eating, drinking coffee and socializing. Twice a year we have outings. We welcome you wholeheartly and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday at 10:00 am in the Parish Hall. Follow up with Anne Barnes if you have any questions.

Fellowship Opportunity If you are looking to meet more people at HoP and develop deeper relationships, we have the answer for you! Fellowship Groups are people who gather on a monthly basis for social and/or service project events. All are welcome! No special talents required, just a desire to connect with others. There are groups of all ages, so please feel free to contact Jim and Heidi Thomas to find out how to get connected.
Military Update ~ Please keep all military personnel and their families in our prayers. It is very important that we remember all those that currently and in the past have served our country to keep us safe and free. Help us update our military board (located on the south side of the main office door) by providing information about House of Prayer members (or relatives of members) who are currently in active military service.
Submit a picture (if possible) and current information on name, where they are stationed and any other information you wish to share with us. We want to honor them, thank them for their service and pray for them. Please consider emailing or writing them once in awhile. Submit your information to Annette Bray. H.O.M.E is a program that helps older adults (age 60 plus) remain independent by providing services they are unable to do for themselves. Service costs are based on a sliding contribution scale.
